When you land an audition or meeting with a casting director or agent, it’s natural to focus on your performance. But just as important as your delivery is how you present yourself in conversation. Whether you’re a new actor or already building a career in Texas, being prepared for the questions they’ll ask can leave a lasting impression.
Here are some of the most common questions you might hear—and how to answer them with confidence.
What to Expect in the Room
Agents want to know who you are beyond your resume. Here are a few questions they often ask:
- “What are your goals as an actor?”
This isn’t a trick question. They want to know if you’re someone who’s in it for the long haul. You don’t need a perfect answer, just an honest one. I often say, “I want to work steadily in TV and film in Texas and stay rooted in this community.” - “What types of roles do you see yourself in?”
Be specific. Think about your look, voice, and personality. For me, I usually lean into grounded, comedic, or maternal roles. - “Are you union or non-union?”
Even in Texas, this matters. Be honest and know what each option means for your opportunities. - “Tell me about your training.”
This is where all those classes, workshops, and on-set experiences come in handy.
How to Be Ready
- Know your story. What brought you to acting? What keeps you going? Share it with heart.
- Have a question ready. You’re allowed to ask them something, too. My go-to is: “What do you look for in talent when you’re building your roster?”
- Stay current. You don’t have to be famous, but you should be informed. Mention recent projects, classes, or networking events you’ve attended.
The more comfortable you are talking about yourself, the easier it is to build relationships in the industry. In Texas, especially, where the community is tight-knit, being authentic really matters.
