I remember the first time I invested in some headshots. My first ever. I was so naive, I didn’t know what to look for in a photographer.
Looking back now it makes me laugh but it was hands down the best decision I made! My headshots weren’t perfect.
The picture was black and white, in film, and a bit overexposed but I didn’t care! I remember having wind blown through my hair for the glamour effect lol, it was a mess!
Take action & step in the direction of your dreams.
But I still love and cherish that photo…why? Because I took action. It was one of my earliest baby steps towards doing something I’ve always dreamt of doing.
After I saved enough to hire an experienced headshot photographer, I knew what mistakes to avoid.
Tips for great headshots
What decisions have you been nervous about making? If you are new to acting or have been around for a while but haven’t taken professional headshots yet, maybe you are afraid of taking the plunge. Do it anyway!
If you are having trouble getting comfortable in front of the camera, take some shots of your own (or with a friend) to break the ice.
If you don’t know what to look for in a photographer, read through my blog posts.
Can’t afford headshots?
That’s ok. If you are starting out, chances are you will be working in student films or low low-budget projects. You can take your own photos and submit those for small projects. Read all about this here.
Worried about how to pose or dress?
Sometimes we over-think things. And sometimes we don’t think about things enough. So here is a quick guide to help you determine how to choose your ‘look’. When in doubt, be yourself and let your personality shine. Read more here.
Will you need to retouch your pics or retake them?
Sometimes we feel insecure and want our photographers to retouch our headshots. Or maybe you are worried that your photo will be retouched like those in fashion magazines. Don’t worry. If you have minor imperfections like stubborn hair out of place or acne spot, it will be retouched. Read all about that here.
Now for those of you who already took headshots but aren’t sure if you should retake them, read this post for a guideline.
Show me yours!
Alright, here are the proofs to my first headshot ever. I wasn’t lying about the glamour effect lol. Show me your headshots in the comment section! And if you haven’t taken them yet, just have fun with it.
