Do you want to work without an agent? Read this first

When you’re starting out (or even coming back after a break), the whole “agent” thing feels like this giant mystery. Do you absolutely need one to book work? Or can you get by without one? In Texas, the answer is a little different than in LA or New York, and honestly, that’s what makes our market pretty special.

The Truth About Agents in Texas

Here’s the deal: you don’t need an agent to start acting in Texas. You can audition for community theater, student films, indie projects, and even some commercials without one. That’s actually how a lot of us build our first credits. I’ve seen plenty of actors hustle their way into short films, passion projects, and local theater before they ever signed with anyone.

But… once you start wanting bigger auditions, think commercials for big brands, roles in major TV shows filming in Austin, or background work on Hollywood films that come through — having an agent really helps. They’re the ones who get access to the casting calls that never hit the public boards.

What an Agent Actually Does

Here’s what to expect when you have representation in Texas:

  • Access to auditions you can’t get alone. Casting directors usually go to agents first.

  • Saves you time. Instead of hunting down every opportunity, you get curated submissions.

  • Professional credibility. Having an agent tells people you’re serious and marketable.

But remember: an agent is not a magician. They don’t guarantee bookings. You’re still responsible for training, keeping your headshots and reel updated, and actually nailing the auditions.

How to Know If You’re Ready

Ask yourself:

  • Do I already have a few solid credits on my resume?

  • Do I have professional headshots (not selfies, not iPhone pics)?

  • Am I consistently auditioning on my own but hitting a ceiling?

If you’re nodding yes to these, you might be ready to start reaching out to agents. If not, that’s totally fine — it just means you’re in the “building stage,” and Texas has plenty of opportunities for that.

So, do you need an agent in Texas? Not right away. But if your goal is to level up into bigger markets within Texas, commercials, union jobs, larger film and TV roles, eventually, yes. The key is timing. Don’t rush into it because you feel pressured. Build your foundation, then let the agent amplify what you’ve already started.
